Rag Rug Techniques – Introduction

This project illustrates how to make a hanging heart decoration with hooky and clippy technique.

Traditionally made through necessity, to create a floor covering from scrap textiles, heritage rug making techniques are now regaining popularity with the upsurge in recycling. Techniques can be adapted to suit the resources available. Working with wool or fabric strips, hooks or prodders, you can follow formal patterns or develop your own freeform designs.  There are two main types of techniques you will learn, ‘clippy’ and ‘hooky’, and there are many other names for them.
